Live-In Caregiver to live with an Individual in their Home in South Calgary, AB.

We are recruiting a Live-In Caregiver to live in our quiet family home environment (where the parent is away many times throughout the year) to support our female adult with independent living skills. As a young adult with a developmental delay disability living at home, this family member has a life that’s full.

This position allows for flexibility within the daily routine. Respite is available.

Duties:
Build a relationship with and get to know our family member by spending time with our family member
– Review the daily schedule (including preplanned community support with day workers) and adjust if needed, on a daily basis (for example, include quiet time before or after an activity
– Collaborate as a team with the day support workers and communicate with them to understand if the activities of the day need to be revised as a result of fatigue and stress
– Monitor fatigue and suggest quiet time for relaxation
– Collaborate with our family member to engage in all aspects of cooking and break down each task including: Healthy menu planning, researching healthy recipes, writing a grocery list, purchasing groceries and cooking
– Take our family member to occasional appointments and support with filling out forms
– Use coping strategies developed by the team/family when necessary in times of fatigue
– Respond to unpredictable situations, if necessary, in a calm manner and problem solve with team members
– Support our family member by being present and answering questions respectfully by guiding and directing
– Safeguard the individual in the home and community when needed
– Spend time with our family member doing activities in the evenings and weekends (e.g. board games, movies, library)

– Qualifications:

– knowledgeable and self-directed
– Have experience with mental health and developmental disabilities
– Knowledge of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is desirable
– Background in psychology and/or counselling is an asset
– Strong understanding of and commitment to inclusion
– The ability to problem-solve and deal with unpredictable situations
– The ability to demonstrate patience and use thoughtful language
– Coaching and mentorship skills. Lead by example and support our family member to continue learning new skills and develop increasing independence
– A valid Class 5 driver’s license; access to a reliable vehicle and applicable insurance and a clean driver’s abstract
– First Aid and CPR certification is an asset
– Recent Criminal Record Check
