The Calgary Chess Club will be hosting a world-class chess event featuring at least four Grand Master Chess Players such as GM Eugenio Torre. The 3rd installment of the Calgary International Chess Classic will be the most ambitious chess tournament in the history of the Calgary Chess Club.

Calgary, Alberta, Canada -The 3rd installment of the Calgary International Chess Classic will be the most ambitious chess tournament in the history of the Calgary Chess Club. For the first time, the tournament will offer what is known in the chess world as Grand Master norm opportunities. Such opportunities on Canadian soil are rare. In fact, last year there were only two events in Canada that were strong enough to offer such stiff competition. A Grand Master norm is a performance evaluation. To earn one, you must perform at the level of a Grand Master in a strong chess competition. To become a Grand Master (GM), one must earn three such norms, as well as get your chess rating to the 2500 mark in internationally ranked competitions. It may sound easy, but in reality it is extremely difficult. To put things into perspective, Canada has only 6 GMs. There are roughly 1,200 GMs in the world today with the majority of them living in Europe, Russia and Asia.

To be able to provide a tournament of this caliber, you must have a minimum of 3 GMs and a mix of International Master’s (IMs) as well. You must also have at least 4 different countries represented in the tournament. Since most titled chess players live outside of Alberta, we had to go around the world to bring in the talent required.

Enter GM Eugenio Torre. Outside of the chess world, he is an unknown quantity. If you were to go to the Philippines, you would discover that he is a household name. Eugenio is as famous in his country as Wayne Gretzky is in Canada. I put this to the test. I got in touch with several Philippine people and brought up his name in conversation. After talking to over a dozen Philippine’s, every single one of them not only knew who Torre was, but were familiar with his lifetime achievements. A brief history of Torre reveals that he is the first Asian GM of chess. He earned the title in 1972 at a time when it was extremely difficult to achieve. He was one of the few players ever to defeat Anatoly Karpov, world champion from 1975?1984. Winning that game made him a national hero. Torre was strong enough in the 80s to be a contender for the World Chess Championship, a lofty goal that he was never able to realize. What Torre is best known for in the chess world was his close relationship to Bobby Fischer, the famed American chess genius who catapulted to the World Championship in 1972 and brought chess to the front of American culture at the height of the cold war. Eugenio was part of Fischer’s team during the famous rematch with Boris Spassky in 1992. Some years later, Torre interviewed Fischer on Bomba radio of the Philippines. These interviews revealed the unknown side of Fischer to the world. Fischer died 2 years ago, but would have celebrated his birthday today.

Torre will be one of at least four GMs at the Calgary International Chess Classic this year. Torre will also be doing a lecture while he is here for chess starved fans. The other attending GMs along with Alberta’s talented Eric Hansen and a host of other internationally recognized players will ensure this will not be a walk in the park.
